Isabelle Vanderbeck, GEF projects task manager of the UN Environment, discussing the Blue Forests Project as a partnership project and the importance of linking the scientific community, the NGO world, local communities and other international stakeholders.
Fernando Bretos, Cuba Marine Research and Conservation Program (CubaMar)
Fernando Bretos, director of Cuba Mar, discussing how Cuban coastal communities understand the importance of the protection of the ecosystems they rely on as well as the challenges of getting the Cuban government to recognize the value of marine and coastal ecosystems. Fernando Bretos goes on by mentioning that the main issue in Cuba is the implementation of marine protected areas (MPA) and by adding that this issue could be addressed by giving more value to coastal zones. Fernando Bretos also highlights the announcement of the Cuban government about their plan of protecting over 25 percent of the land and waters by 2020.
Jane Glavan, Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative
Jane Glavan, partnership project manager of AGEDI UAE, highlighting the key role that communities play in the success of the Blue Forests projects and discussing their importance when it comes to moving Blue Carbon related projects forward. Jane Glavan also shares how AGEDI includes communities in many areas of the project for example in mapping and information analysis.
Steven Lutz, UN Environment | GRID-Arendal
Steven Lutz, Programme Leader on Blue Carbon at GRID-Arendal shares that one success of the Blue Forest Project comes by co-finance from the United Arab Emirates and AGEDI. He explains that they have developed a Blue Carbon project on the ground that is now being recognized in international commitments that the UAE has made on climate change. He goes on by highlighting that the outcomes of this project have a significant international impact.
